Earlier this week, icy weather lead to a lot of Dallas car wrecks. With roads slick, driving conditions were very dangerous. In fact, over 170 Dallas car wrecks were reported by the Dallas Police Department — and that was before midnight on Monday. Ninety more Dallas car wrecks were confirmed by police between midnight and 5:30am on Tuesday.
The problem was slick roads and freezing rain and fog. Ice on bridges and roads is tough to see when you’re driving, and the freezing rain and fog don’t exactly help when it comes to visibility. Drivers were urged to allow for plenty of time to travel, but still, there were a very high amount of Dallas car wrecks that occurred over Monday and Tuesday.
It’s no secret that winter can bring us some very dangerous driving conditions. Icy roads, low visibility — it’s a recipe for disaster. If you’re expecting to have to drive in these dangerous conditions, it’s best to be prepared so you can avoid having a Dallas car wreck. The Texas Department of Transportation has given out some helpful safety tips in regards to driving in winter weather. Here are some of their tips:
- Accelerate slowly; brake gently in slow, steady strokes to see how much traction you have. Start braking early when you approach intersections or stops.
- Allow plenty of time to get where you’re going.
- Increase your following distance.
- Don’t use cruise control.
- Approach bridges, shaded spots, turns and overpasses slowly.
With the holidays coming up, it’s likely many people will be driving long distances in potentially dangerous weather. Stay safe out there!
